A soldier Mentioned in Despatches (or Dispatches) (MID) is one whose name appears in an official report written by a superior officer and sent to the high command, in which is described the soldier's gallant or meritorious action in the face of the enemy.
In a number of countries, a soldier's name must be mentioned in despatches as a condition for him to receive certain decorations.
Soldiers of the British Empire or the Commonwealth of Nations who are mentioned in despatches but do not receive a medal for their action are nonetheless entitled to receive a certificate and wear a decoration. For 1914-18 and up to 10th August 1920, the decoration consisted of a spray of oakleaves in bronze.
The book has an index of names to those who were awarded an MID.
It provides the Commonwealth Gazette details that the MID appeared in and lists the name of the unit that the person was in when the MID was awarded.
