[ AM36 ] English Civil war Cromwellian armour with helmet Circa 1630 1650 ON HOLD SOLD
THIS SET IF GOING BACK HOME TO THE UK- ITS SOLD, WE ARE JUST WORKING OUT A TRADE DEAL
My apologies for the poor way this set is displayed in the images but i have ran out of room.
English Civil war Cromwellian armour with helmet Circa 1630 1660 , musket ball test to the front of the armour, nice old set of hard to find armour. Last image is a close up of the musket ball dent.
This set of armour was painted black which you see more often than not, I have carefully removed the paint on the exterior & oiled it . I nearly always just sell items as i find them but this one time i thought, that needs to be stripped off. I listed this set on my site 8 to 12 months ago & only now i decided to get it done & take some images. The price I am selling for is cash price only, trade price is more.
I haven't started on the helmet as yet, the 2 plates took me days & days of carefully scraping the paint off with pieces of wood so as to not scratch up the plates.
as pics will show it has come up quite nice, whoever painted it all those years ago painted over a bit of surface rust, I believe the majority could be removed with oiling, WD 40 a rag & some spare time. I will continue to wipe all the oil off & re oil several times a week so as to remove some of the reddish rust, The paint job was probably a blessing in disguise as it has protected the iron work from the elements for a lot of years
The armour has leather shoulder straps with small plates attached, The leather has been replaced at some point in time & what i presume are the original plates re attached ( not many leather straps lasted from then till now so i guess that can be forgiven) The waist belt on the armour is also replaced & i would hazard a guess that the leather holding the helmet side lames / ear protectors is also replaced leather.I haven't attempted to remove the paint from all the small plates on the leather shoulder straps. when i get time i may start on them .
I have no idea when i will get a chance to remove the paint from the helmet, when i do i will re take images of it.
Both plates have pitting bas expected, the front is more pitted than the rear. images show all the bad bits warts & all so there are no surprises, & as usual it comes with satisfaction guarantee If you dont like it return it for a refund (less postage cost both ways ) & life time guarantee of authenticity $7000
