Description

b153 Scarce Inuit Eskimo knife with scrimshaw, this looks as old as Methuselah, Very old Bone handle ? could be real old Ivory looking at the colour, but may also be wood, sorry I cant be sure of this one without conducting a couple of tests & running the risk of doing damage , end has some cracks as seen in pics, it appears to be inset with Bone on the very end of the pommel, quite a crude blade obviously made for heavy work, scabbard appears to be made from bone & has some scrimshaw work as per images, there are a couple of cracks on the curve of the scabbard which will be shown in the images, the leather at the top is quite old & dry, looking at the colour of it compared to the knife handle i wonder if the scabbard has been replaced at some point in time, I heated up a metal pin to red hot & touched the Bone like material on the scabbard , nothing melted so i can assume it is bone & not resin, The handle & knife I am certain are original antiques but there is just something about the scabbard i cant guarantee. Its not the sort of thing i see around my neck of the woods to be able to compare to others
