b148 possibly a rare piece- a proposed Commando Bayonet ww2 shortened 1928 Lithgow, still researching this with the help of Ian Skennerton, if not an experimental item its at least a very nice ww2 Australian Trench fighting knife made from a cut down 1928 Lithgow, this is a ripper of a ww2 trench knife, would have been a bloody nice bayonet if still complete, images speak for the item, very well done, I would go as far as to say its factory done hence why i contacted Ian Skennerton to get his opinion, either way its a good piece for the fighting knife collector, a mate of mine just purchased this a week ago from a very elderly lady- it was her husbands who served in ww2.
as mentioned above I have spoken to Ian Skennerton re this knife & i am waiting on a reply to a couple of other queries i have on this one, In the book British & Commonwealth bayonets a very similar example to this is on page 289, a proposed commando bayonet, they set the OA length at 298mm whereas this one is a little longer at 315mm,
Ian's 1st response is below
"Some were cut down to 8-inch blades as the Owen Mk I/I bayonet.
See 'Aust. Service Bayonets' pp. 109 and also 56.
Also false edgs p. 561
Also see 'British & Commonwealth Bayonets' A14 p. 279 and reference4 p. 289."
Ian says he does need to see it in person to gain more accurate info, so i will add any other info i get from Ian as it comes.
