[ b1192 ] 1842 dated Silver mount Scottish dirk with family crest and motto
Large 1842 dated Silver mount Scottish dirk with family crest and motto, Nice Dirk but also a bit unusual ,At 1st glance i thought this scabbard is not original to the dirk because it didn't fit together like the standard dirk with male/ female fitting , but this dirk has a solid metal ferrule that is filled in underneath so it was never meant for a scabbard to slip in under the ferrule,
All the scabbard fittings are silver & engraved with wreath & Scottish thistles, scabbard throat With monogrammed initials & engraved family crest (depicting a blade wielding arm) above the marking " D.M.SA & 1842 ". Above the family crest that appears to be the crest of the MacNiel clan ?? is the Gaelic motto "buaidh no bas", which translates from Scottish Gaelic as "to conquer or die", or "victory or death
Beautifully carved pattern to handle, with black leather covered scabbard. Blade has a deep fuller with sawback edge to spine. Not the usual scalloping.
The utensils - knife and fork are both included and fit into black leather scabbard and are also decoratively carved with woven pattern and studded BUT THEY ARE BOTH RUBBISH & would not be original to the Dirk, They should be fixed by a professional or thrown away in my opinion.
Decoratively etched hilt at the ricasso & along the spine of the blade but the spine shows considerable wear to engraving, pommel has Scottish thistle in relief & appears to be a mixture of Silver & maybe copper or brass, hard to tell, a good polish will probably make it clearer.
Fixed fastening loop on rear of throat has been repaired at some point in more modern times as it has a dab of solder , I believe the entire back of the scabbard is a repair, the very tip of the scabbard does come off where it has had a break in the leather but if you are careful when handling it will be fine.
Blade is a very nice thick & heavy --blade Length 11 inches, Overall Length is 17 inches
