Spots you can see in the photographs are just oil etc, i didnt wipe the blade before i took images,the blade is PERFECT.
Very nice Shinto period Katana in full Japanese polish with tameshigiri ( cutting test on a body) Blade has no flaws & a very nice active blade,Hamon is full of Ashi .The blade is an excellent length,so close to 28 inch cutting edge its not funny. The sword has just been polished in Japan .
Signature: Komei Shimosaka 5 dai Jindaijo Kanesaki Migaki age kore.
Enkyo 2nen 5gatsu 21nichi Inshu ni oite,
Tanoshima 3tsu-do Kiriotoshi, dochu hairu 3sun
Matsui Tame-noshin tameshi.
The sword has beautiful fittings (koshirae) which consist of the following
Tsuba - iron tsuba with gold / brass inlay of flower & vines.
Fuchi / kashira Shakudo nanako of kiku flowers with gold inlay
Scabbard is very nice goldy brown coloured lacquer with tiny line designs.
Menuki - Shakudo Noshi design with gold inlay
Blade length : 70.9 cm or 27.91 inches.
Sori : 1.7 cm or 0.66 inches.Mekugi : 2
Width at the hamachi :3.08 cm or 1.21 inches.
Width at the Kissaki : 2.13 cm or 0.83 inches.
Kasane : 0.79cm or 0.31 inches.
Era : Edo period Kanbun era.
Shape : suriage.(shortened tang) The blade is wide and thick with a longer kissaki and is a very healthy chunky blade.
Jitetsu :Itame hada well grained with much jinie attch.
Hamon : Suguha hamon with a lot of ashi.
This blades signature is from Shimosaka school but has been cut short in 1744 (Entei era) According to the Nakago 5th generation Jindaiyu kanesaki cut short the tang and Matsui was tested on a body ( Tameshigiri ) The cutting test was a success and succeeded to cut clean through the body under the chest (mitsudo which means under the chest) and the sword went through the body into the sand mound 3sun (9cm or 3,5 inches) so clean through the body & 9 cm into the dirt..
The Shimosaka school was working at Echizen province and produced some good smiths ,quite well known sword maker Yasutsugu was included.
